Chosen Ones
June 9, 1999
Dear Friends,
Yesterday was such a wonderful day, that I felt I had to share it with my
friends on the list. I have not been keeping up with my mail very well
lately, but it seems there is never enough good news--I always feel better
when I see a happy post! So here is my contribution. :-)
Yesterday was a day my whole family had been anxiously looking forward to.
After over two years of work, I finally finished a monumental project. The
last two weeks have been horribly hard for my family. I have been doing
final editing and typesetting on a book--working from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
everyday in an effort to get a book out to the printer. It has been
grueling, not only on me, but on my boys and my husband. Frank (my husband)
even made sandwiches and brought them in to my computer room so I would eat.
The boys even took care of my dog so I could concentrate on my project.
They had good reason to take care of me and to encourage me to finish the
project. The reward was dinner and a movie. Not just any, old movie. Star
Wars: Episode One!
Like all kids in the United States right now, my kids have been Star Wars
crazy these last few weeks. I bought each of them Star Wars shoes and a Star
Wars t-shirt, so they were ready to go!
After picking my husband up at school, we went out to eat. The boys could
hardly eat anything. They were too excited about the movie. When we got to
the theater, we were surprised to see a full parking lot, but hardly anyone
in the Star Wars cinema. It was kind of nice having the theater practically
to ourselves!
Joey and Alex were on the edge of their seats almost the entire time. It's a
great movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I remember enjoying the other Star
Wars movies when I was a kid, too.
After the movie Alex and I went to the bathroom. While we were in there he
asked me why Anakin Skywalker was going to become a Jedi Knight. I explained
that it was Anakin's destiny. So, of course, Alex wanted to know what
"destiny" meant. I said, "It's what you were meant to do. Like your destiny
was to inspire me to write a book. And it's your destiny to inspire lots of
other parents who have kids like you--that there is hope for a happy life.
That's what destiny is." He really seemed to get it.
That conversation got me to thinking about my son's destiny. It is not so
different from the main character in the movie. Anakin Skywalker is "The
Chosen One." I can't help but feel that Alexander is a Chosen One, too. I
can't help but feel that all of our heart children are "Chosen Ones." What
is their destiny? What will they grow up to become? A Jedi Knight is one
who has The Force with him. Don't all of our children also have a great
force in their lives? Just like the Jedi Knights, some survive to be great
warriors, but some die and become one with the Force. What is it that causes
some of our children to survive, while so many others do not? It is not
simply a matter of biology or anatomy. We all know of cases where children
with heart defects less serious than our own children's have not made it.
That is why we all suffer from survivor's guilt when one of our own dies.
Amazing how an innocent child's question can lead one to think great
philosophical thoughts.
I hope all of you have a great day and enjoy your Chosen Ones. May the Force
be with you! And may all the angels who are one with the Force smile
sunshine down on you today. :-)
Love,
